This is a Confederate Cavalry saber made by the Nashville Plow Works of Nashville, Tennessee. Thomas Sharp and J.T. Hamilton produced farm implements in their Nashville Plow Works factory before the outbreak of the Civil War. When Tennessee succeeded from the Union, the firm began to produce edged weaponry for the south at the Nashville location from mid 1861 until 1 April, 1862, when Union troops captured Nashville. Sharp and Hamilton, along with the mayor of Nashville and several others were arrested for treason. The Nashville Plow Works produced swords for less than a year for the Confederacy, making their products scarce and highly collectible. This Nashville Plow Works Cavalry saber measures 40 3/4" overall, with a blade length of 34 3/4". The blade is slightly curved with a flat spine and measures 1 1/4" at the guard. It is a single edged blade with an unstopped fuller that measures 27". The edge of the blade has a couple of minute nicks, felt more than seen. The blade has a dark steel gray patina with dark freckling scattered along the length of the blade. The blade has never been sharpened. The brass hilt has a beautiful, untouched deep golden patina. There are the usual cast flaws and rough finish work you expect to see on Confederate brass. The leather throat washer is missing. The blade is tight on the grip with no deflection. The wooden grip is covered with a black leather wrap, and it shows honest wear from use. The narrow gauge twisted brass wire complete and still tight on the grip. The brass back strap with integral pommel cap has a patina matching the guard. The peen is unmolested, as is the entire sword. The iron ferrule at the base of the grip next to the guard is tight on the grip. The scabbard is made of iron and has brass mounts with the smaller iron rings, brass "boat" throat and drag. The seam on the back of the scabbard is overlapped and soldered. The mounts show obvious wear from the iron suspension rings, so this one didn't just hang around in camp! Overall this is an excellent example of a Nashville Plow Works manufactured Cavalry saber that saw service during the Civil War. It will complement any Confederate Cavalry collection.
