This is a Mills Pattern 1881 Sportsman woven cartridge belt from the American Indian Wars period. Prior to the Spanish American War Mills held the contracts for these woven cartridge belts for the US government, as well as the commercial market. In 1880 Mills signed a five year contract allowing the Winchester Arms Company to market his belts and plates. This is one of those belts. The webbed belt is in very good, but used condition. It measures 3" wide and is 41 1/2" long. There are 50 single row loops for .30-40 caliber Krag cartridges. The belt shows signs of wear and use, but not abuse. The brass fittings and buckle are not stamped with the usual Mills information. They have a matching golden yellow patina, with the hounds head being very detailed. The belt is a little dirty in spots, but as strong as the day it was manufactured. Eight of the cartridge loops have holes in them, but this one could still be used today. It would look great displayed with your Krag rifle or carbine!
