WWI US Model 1918 Tunic 29th Division

This is a Model 1918 style winter uniform from World War I. The 1918 tunic is made from high quality wool material. It features the four pocket design with epaulets. The five button coat has the bright US eagle buttons, with six smaller buttons of the same type for the pockets and epaulets. The coat buttons are all back marked "ARNHEIM NEW YORK". The smaller buttons are all back marked "ARNHEIM NEW YORK". The coat is fully lined and has an inner pocket on the left side. There is a makers label found in two places on this tunic. Sewn into the collar area on the lining of the tunic is the label of Marks Arnheim of New York. Sewn into the inner pocket the label reads Marks Arnheim/Tailors and Importers/Broadway and Ninth St./New York. The left sleeve has a 29th Infantry Division patch sewn on. Below the unit insignia is a red stripe indicating the soldier was wounded. Above the left sleeve cuff are two bullion chevrons, indicating one year of overseas service. The collar disc are the WWI versions, from 1908. The left disc is the crossed rifles of the Infantry, with the regimental number 116 above and the letter E below. This represents Company E, 116th Infantry Regiment, of the 29th Infantry Division. This unit gained great fame on June 6th, 1944 on Omaha beach. The right collar disc is the National Guard, with the intertwined USNG. The 29th Division was and still is a National Guard unit. There are two small holes on the tunic, both appear to be insect damage. The 29th Division was only involved in the Meuse-Argonne offensive during the war. In 21 days of combat, the division suffered 30% casualties. 170 officers and 5691 enlisted men were wounded or killed during those three weeks. If only this tunic were identified. Regardless, it will make a fine addition to your WWI collection.
