This is a 12 gauge double barrel black powder percussion shotgun from the mid 1800's. The gun has an overall length of 47 1/2", with the barrels measuring 31" in length. The barrels have a smooth exterior, no pitting with light pinpricking around the bolster areas. Both barrels have an even plum patina. The bores are dark with patches of rust and pitting throughout, but may clean up for the most part. There is one stamp visible on the side of the left barrel, the Belgian "Perron" proof and view stamp used since 1853. The under side of the barrels are probably covered in Belgian stamps, but the tang screw refuses to budge. I'll leave it to the new owner to remove that one! This is the only stamping on the weapon. The side plates have no markings and have a smooth appearance. The hammers match the side plates in appearance and lack of markings of any kind. The mechanics need some work, the left lock holds in half cock but not full cock, the right will not hold in half cock but will in full cock. They both snap forward when their respective trigger is depressed. The left hammer will need replacing, as the striking face of the hammer is broken off. The iron butt plate has a dark patina that matches the barrels and locks. The remainder of the hardware on this shotgun is brass, the escutcheon plates, trigger guard, nose cap and oval inlay on the bottom of the stock. W. H. Nicholls has been engraved into the bottom of the trigger guard. The iron ram rod thimbles and nose cap are securely attached. The wooden ram rod is missing the brass or iron cap, but still has the threaded attachment for gun tools on the other end. The stock has a beautiful, dark appearance. There are the usual bumps and dings associated from handling, but this gun has not been abused. There are nor cracks in the stock anywhere. The wrist area of the stock has been checkered, and shows some moderate wear from use. Carved into the bottom of the stock is a beautiful stag, makes me think of the German Roe buck. A check rest has also been incorporated into the left side of the stock. This is great looking gun, and will make the perfect fireplace or wall mount.
