This is a US M5A1 Bayonet made for the M-1 rifle with an M8A1 scabbard. The M5A1 bayonet is manufactured by Columbus Milpar & Manufacturing Company. The bayonet has an overall length of 11 3/8", with a blade length of 6 5/8". The M5 bayonet was designed to be used with the M1 Garand. It was discovered during the Korean War that the M1 bayonet was difficult to install or removed from the weapon while wearing heavy gloves. The M5 replaced the M1 in 1953, and featured a new attachment system. Instead of using a muzzle ring, the M5 used a stud on the cross guard that inserted into the gas cylinder lock screw. A simple release system working with the bayonet lug allowed the user to remove or install the bayonet while wearing heavy gloves. The M5A1 was introduced in 1955 and incorporated an improved latch system. The spear point style blade, cross guard and pommel are all parkerized. The two piece grips are made of black plastic and are flawless. The M8A1 scabbard is in very good condition. The web hanger is equipped with the M1910 style hook, enabling it to be carried from a pistol belt or other web gear equipped with eyelets. The scabbard is made by the Pennsylvania Working Home for the Blind. The scabbard tip has the metal guard to prevent the bayonet from coming through. The metal throat is stamped M8A1/PWH. Both the bayonet and scabbard were produced in the early to mid 1960's. If you collect American bayonets, you'll need one of these to complete your collection.
