This is a Confederate cast I button from the American Civil War. It is in great condition considering it was excavated. This one came into the shop with oral history of being recovered in Highland County, Virginia. The area was the site of the Battle of McDowell, also known as the Battle of Sitlington's Hill. The battle took place on 8 May, 1862 and was considered a Confederate victory. Approximately 6500 Union soldiers under the overall command of Brigadier Generals Robert Milroy and Robert Schenk were engaged with 9000 Confederate soldiers under the command of Major General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson during the one day battle. The Battle of McDowell was one of many battels won by Jackson and his men during his Valley Campaign. The button has a beautiful dark chocolate patina, and is a white metal button made of pewter. There are no nicks or any other damage with this button. The shank is still present and standing, but the hole is worn through. That is most likely the cause for the button coming off the uniform. There is no visible makers mark on the back. This is an iconic piece that easily identifies with the American Civil War in excellent condition for an excavated example.
