This is a Carte de Vista of Lieutenant General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Born in Chapel Hill, Tn. in 1821 to a poor settler family, Forrest was the oldest of twelve children. He became the head of household in 1837 at the age of 16 when his father William died. In 1841 he went into business with his uncle, Jonathan Forrest, in Hernando, Mississippi. Forrest became a very successful businessman, and by the time the Civil War broke out he owned two plantations in Mississippi, a half interest in another in Arkansas and was said to worth over 1.5 million dollars. When Tennessee seceded from the Union Forrest returned home and enlisted as a Private in the Confederate Army. The governor of Tennessee commissioned Forrest as a Lieutenant Colonel and authorized him to raise a battalion of mounted rangers. The rest, as they say, is history! With little formal education, and no military education at all, Nathan Bedford Forrest went on to become one of the most effective Cavalry commanders to ever sit a saddle. He would command at the Regimental, Brigade, Division and Corps level. His tactics were later taught at military academies in the United States and abroad. He was a Private at the beginning of the war and rose to the rank of Lieutenant General. This CDV is in very good condition. Forrest is in the uniform of a Confederate General. His frock coat is outfitted with four sets of two buttons per side, which in 1861 indicated the rank of a Confederate Brigadier General. As the war went on and the ranks of Major General, Lieutenant General and full General were added, no changes to the Confederate uniform regulations were made. The image shows Forrest with his shoulders square with the camera. The front of the print has no writing on it all. In pencil on the back of the image is written is an inventory number, CDV 3584. The corners of the image are perfectly square and crisp. The image is free of smudges, stains, rips, tears or any other imperfections. It is the clearest and cleanest image of Forrest that I have ever had. The back mark of this CDV is of E & H.T Anthony located at 501 Broadway in New York City, New York. This CDV of a fierce Confederate fighting General is getting hard to come by, especially one as pristine as this one! If you collect Civil War images, your collection won't be complete without this one!
