WWII US Armor Corps Patch
Item #: WR723

This is a shoulder patch of the US Army Armor Corps used during World War II. The triangular armor patch was originally designed in 1918 by World War I Tank Corps personnel. The colors of the patch denote yellow for cavalry, blue for infantry and red for artillery. The first members of the Armor Corps came from one of these three branches of the Army. The patch symbolizes the union of the three to make the new Armor Corps. In 1940 the tank treads, gun and lighting bolt were added to the patch. The treads represent mobility and armor protection, the gun represent firepower and the lightning bolt the shock effect of armor. The patch has pretty much remained the same, with the addition of the tab to designate armored divisions or the armor school. This patch is from the WWII period, and has been removed from a uniform. I'm not certain if the patch had a separate tab, if this one was worn by Armor School personnel or if it was for an unassigned Armor officer. It is missing a couple of small sections of the green border, but otherwise is in very good condition. It will make a nice addition to your WWII armor patch collection.
