This is a cap wreath authorized for wear on officer's headgear from 1855 - 1865. The wreath, made up of laurel branches tied together at the bottom with a ribbon, is made of tin. It is secured to the hat by means of hooks on the reverse side that are pushed through the fabric and bent over. The worn normally worn on kepi's, but could be worn on the Model 1858 forage cap as well. This is a non excavated hat badge that still has both sets of hooks. I believe that the soldier is not Civil War period, and more than likely a previous owner reattached the hooks. The badge has a very nice aged patina, with just a couple of spots of the gold wash showing through. This one displays well on it's own, or could be placed on your headgear for that complete the cap look!
