This is a Model 1851 Colt Navy cap and ball revolver. The serial number 98433 puts this one in the production year of 1861. The 7 1/2" barrel needs a good cleaning, with a dirty bore and visible rifling. The single line ADDRESS COL. SAMl COLT HARTFORD CT. address is clearly visible. The Colt patent mark is worn, with Colt being worn off and only PATENT still being visible. The cylinder scene is pretty faint as well, with just traces of the naval engagement scene still visible. The serial numbers are very crisp and match, with the exception of the wedge. It is unmarked but appears to be a period replacement. The gun has an overall plum patina. The mechanics of this old Colt work perfectly. About 50% of the original silver wash remains on the trigger guard and back strap. The exposed brass has taken on a medium golden patina that is very eye pleasing. The walnut grips have the majority of the original varnish remaining, with a couple of small bumps and dings on the sides of the grips. They fit the gun like a glove, are not cartouched and have no repairs. Many of these Colt Navy revolvers with the Hartford barrel address were shipped to southern retailors before the war. This one will not letter from Colt, but falls in a known serial number range of guns shipped to South Carolina before the war broke out. This is a beautiful gun that could have fought with some Confederate soldier during the war of northern aggression. Regardless of which side it resided with, this one will make a great addition to your Civil War weapons collection, or your Colt revolver collection.
