This is a Model 1951 cold weather pile from the Korean War period. Constructed of olive drab # 7 cotton poplin with an alpaca lining, the M1951 pile cap was warm and comfortable. The ear flaps could easily be pulled down over the back and sides of the head for extra protection from the cold or be tied up over the crown of the cap when not needed. The visor could also be pulled down to provide glare protection, but was normally worn up. This example of the M1951 pile cap is in very good condition. There are no holes, rips or stains anywhere on the cap. The tiedown strings for the flaps are both still present, as well as the loop for the left ear flap when worn on top of the cap. The instruction label for wear of the cap with the flaps up, down or under the helmet is still present and very legible. The quartermaster tag is also still present and very legible. It shows this cap to be a size 7 1/4, made by the Atlantic Highlands Manufacturing Company and is dated 21 May, 1952. Pinned to the front of the visor are the Sterling bars of a Captain. This is an excellent example of the M1951 pile cap, a piece of cold weather gear that became an icon of the Korean War itself!
