This is a full stock Pennsylvania fowler manufactured by an unknown gunsmith circa 1790's in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. This flintlock fowler measures 64" in length with a 48 1/2" round barrel. The barrel has a dark plum patina and has a smooth, pit free exterior. The barrel is retained by iron pins and one tang screw. The bore is .72 caliber and is dark, shows light pitting and debris along the length of the barrel. I believe most of this will clean up with little effort. There is a set of baluster turned "wedding rings" 11" from the breech. There is no rear sight on the barrel. The front sight is a brass blade design 3 1/2" from the muzzle. There are no visible stamps or markings on the barrel, but it has not been removed from the stock. The four brass ramrod thimbles are securely attached to the stock using iron pins. The lock plate is not marked, there is no engraved decorations on it either. The mechanics of the lock work just as well today as the day it was made! The trigger guard, butt plate and side plate are all made of brass. The all brass furniture gun has a matching muted golden patina. The wooden ram rod appears to be original to the gun. The maple stock is a beautiful reddish brown color, and has a great look to it. There are a couple of small areas of wood loss on the stock, all around where the iron pins pass through. The barrel channel and ram rod channel edges are still very crisp. There is one area where the wood has been replaced along the barrel channel. It is a section about 1/4" wide and 6" long on the right side that goes from the muzzle back to the first ramrod thimble. The repair has been well executed and is barely noticeable. There are no cracks in the stock, just a noticeable gouge on the left side of the stock comb about 1 1/2" long. This is a very fine example of a late 18th century fowler with characteristics identifiable to Bucks County, Pennsylvania. It will certainly enhance any early fowling piece collection!
