This is a rifleman's bag with cow horn powder flask circa 1820 - 1840. This type of bag was utilized by militia men and frontiersmen alike. The single section bag is made of leather and uses a 3/4" wide black leather strap to be worn over the shoulder. The black leather bag measures 7 1/2" tall and 7 3/4" wide. There is some definite wear to the bag, but it remains remarkably supple and pliable. The outer flap is still securely attached. The bottom and sides have no holes. There is a small pin hole in the flap about half way up and to the left. The back of the bag has two holes, both near the edges. One is 1/2" long on the left side and the other is 3/4" long on the right. There is a repair on the lower left hand side on the back as well. This would have been used to carry the rifleman's shot bag, patch material, spare flints, cleaning materials for the gun, bullet mold, lead and melting pot, a powder measure and any gun tools he used. There is one iron buckle on the leather shoulder strap. The leather strap is still very strong and 100% intact. There is a repair on the back side near the iron buckle to stabilize a hole in the leather. The powder flask is made from a cow horn. The horn measures approximately 7 1/4" in length, 2 1/2" across the butte plug and 1/4" across the spout. The horn has aged nicely and shows no cracks or splits. The butte plug is held secure with iron pins and utilizes a screw to attach one of the suspension straps to the horn. The other is simply looped around the spout. The other ends of the suspension straps are threaded through the shoulder strap. The spout plug is reporting for duty. This rifleman's bag with horn came out of Pennsylvania, and has survived the past 180 plus years in remarkable condition.
