This is a wooden Jingasa helmet used by the Japanese Samurai during the Edo period, between 1603 and 1868. The samurai wore the lightweight Jingasa while traveling or when in a camp setting. This one is made of wood and has a black lacquer finish on the inside and the outside. A family Mon, or crest, is done in gold leaf on the front of the helmet that identifies this Jingasa to the Akechi clan. There are no cracks or wood loss anywhere on the helmet, just a couple of scuffs and a small chip or two of the lacquer around the rim of the helmet. The interior of the helmet is in the same condition. The cloth head pad and padded chin strap are still with the helmet. The helmet has a diameter of 17". This Jingasa helmet is from the later Edo period, somewhere between the 1800. It has some awesome display power and great eye appeal!
