This is an excavated .31 caliber pocket pistol manufactured by William W. Marston during the Civil War period. Marston manufactured his weapons in New York City and used several trade names to produce them under. His early guns were manufactured with the name Phenix Armory on the barrel. Later that was changed to the Union Arms company, and finally the Western Arms Company. Between 1858 and the early 1860's Marston turned out approximately 13,000 of these pocket pistols in two different calibers and seven different configurations. They can be found in .31 and .36 caliber with five or six shot cylinders that are plain or fluted. Barrels were octagon or round and could be from 3 1/4" up to 7 1/2" in length. The loading levers on the first six models used a Colt style loading lever, while the 7th model used a Whitney style lever. This is a 4th model .31 caliber five shot revolver with octagon barrel and a fluted cylinder. It would have been made during the 4000 to 6000 serial number range. The gun is complete minus the grips. The serial number, barrel markings and all other stamps are no longer legible. The 6" barrel is still full length and retains the original brass bead front sight. The loading lever is also still full length, but the catch is missing. The fluted cylinder is complete and frozen in position. The hammer is still reporting for duty, and frozen in position as well. All the iron parts have been stabilized to prevent further deterioration. The entire revolver now has a black patina. Finding complete excavated revolvers is a rare thing, especially when one falls into a 2000 serial number range of production! A certificate of authenticity from The Army of Tennessee accompanies this excavated weapon. The only way it could get better is if we knew where it was dug from. If you collect dug weapons or have an excavated Civil War collection this could very well be your center piece!
