This is a bandoleer for the Model 1903 .30-06 rifle. The bandoleer was the first method used by the Ordnance Department that enabled the soldier to carry extra ammunition, or to be resupplied on the line, first used during WWI. The bandoleers were loaded at the ammunition plants and stored in watertight containers. The ammunition plant packing them inserted a small card in one of the pockets that contained the type of ammunition, the plant it was packed at, the Lot Number of the ammo and instructions for returning defective ammunition. The bandoleer is made of khaki cotton cloth and consists of six pockets and a carrying strap. Each pocket carried 12 5 round stripper clips for the Model 1903 rifle. This bandoleer contains 4 5 round stripper clips .30-06 cartridges, every two clips inside a cardboard liner for a total of 20 rounds. All 20 of the rounds are ball ammunition. All ammunition inspected carried a 1918 head stamp date. A small tan card inside one of the pockets shows this ammunition being manufactured at the Winchester Repeating Arms Company of New Haven, Connecticut. This bandoleer has survived the past 104 years well, and remains in excellent condition. The cloth bandolier has no rips or tears, but is stained in several areas. The ammunition itself is not safe to fire, as most of the cartridges inspected have heavy corrosion and verdigris on the cases. It displays well though, and would make a great addition to your WWI US Infantry display.
