This is a bandolier for the M1 Garand or Model 1903 .30-06 rifle. The bandoleer was the first method used by the Ordnance Department that enabled the soldier to carry extra ammunition, or to be resupplied on the line, first used during WWI. The bandoliers were loaded at the ammunition plants and stored in watertight containers. One major difference between the WWI and WWII ammunition bandoleers is the ones used WWI were marked, the ones used during WWII were not. Instead of marking the cloth bandoleers during WWII, the ammunition plant packing them inserted a small card in one of the pockets that contained the type of ammunition, the plant it was packed at, the Lot Number of the ammo and instructions for returning defective ammunition. The bandoleer is made of khaki cotton cloth and consists of six pockets and a carrying strap. Each bandoleer could carry either 12 5 round stripper clips for the Model 1903, or 6 eight round en bloc clips for the M1 Garand. This bandoleer contains 6 en bloc clips loaded with 8 .30-06 cartridges, each clip inside a cardboard liner for a total of 48 rounds. Of the 48 rounds, all 48 are ball ammunition. All ammunition inspected carried a 1943 head stamp date. A small purple card inside one of the pockets identifies the bandoleer being packed at the Denver Ordnance Plant of Denver, Colorado. This bandoleer has survived the past 78 years well, and remains in excellent condition. The cloth bandolier has no stains, rips, tears or any other damage. It displays well and would make a great addition to your WWII US Infantry display.
