This is a US Model 1885 Artillery greatcoat used from the Indian Wars through the Spanish American War period. It is of a medium blue color, as this was the change made in 1885 to get away from the various shades of "sky blue" that varied from dye lots. There is no maker label or size tag in the coat, but it is a smaller size, approximately a size 36 in the chest. The coat is in very good condition for it's age, the only damage being from insects. There is scattered moth damage on both sleeves, around the bottom of the coat and on the red lining inside the coat. There are several areas that have been repaired as well, scattered about on the coat. This is a double breasted coat with all buttons being present to include the cuff buttons. The majority of the buttons are back marked Extra Quality, but two are back marked Scovill, one Waterbury and one Johnson & Steele on the front. The cuff buttons are four Extra Quality and two Scovill. All of the buttons are New York militia staff buttons with the motto EXCELSIOR below the New York eagle and shield. The red lining is full length and has a combination of machine and hand stitching. The beige cotton sleeve linings are hand stitched. There is one inner pocket and no outer pockets. This is most likely a private purchase greatcoat and not a military issue one. While it does have some mothing issues and some repairs, the coat is still very solid and displays great. This would go great with you Indian Wars or Spanish American Wars artillery collection.
