This is a set of fired musket balls from the American Revolution that were recovered northwest of Verplanck Point, near Fort Lafayette in New York. The Continental Army attacked the fort from 16 - 19 July, 1779 in an attempt to take control of that section of the Hudson river. The attack failed for two critical reasons, British reinforcements arrived immediately during the attack and the Americans lacked aartillery and other equipment needed for the attack to be successful. The British remained in control of the fort, but abandoned it in October, 1779 as they moved back into New York City and eventually to Charleston, South Carolina. There is one American and one British musket ball, both fired, in a small riker case. These were once in the Dean Thomas collection. They will make a nice addition to any Rev War collection.
