This is a Model 1862 Navy type carbine manufactured by Sharps & Hankins during the Civil War period. There were approximately 13000 of these Model 1862 Sharps & Hankins carbines produced between 1862 and 1867 in several different variations. This Navy, serial number 5046, was produced during the Civil War period. It is a .52 caliber, rimfire, breechloading carbine with a 24" barrel. The barrel had a black leather cover to help protect it from rust. It is retained to the barrel by two screws at the breech end and a band at the muzzle. Many of the Navy carbines are missing the leather, this one is no exception. The bore is bright, but there is absolutely no rifling left. The adjustable rear sight is still present, as well as the small brass blade front sight located on the barrel band. The barrel on these carbines slides forward when the trigger guard lever is moved forward to allow a round to be loaded into the breech. The mechanics of this carbine operate perfectly. The barrel, frame, hammer and trigger guard have a matching patina. The right side of the frame is stamped SHARPS & HANKINS PHILADA in four lines. The left side is stamped SHARPS PATENT 1859 in three lines. The serial number of 5046 is stamped on the tang of the receiver and on the slide mechanism of the barrel. The brass butt plate has none of the original plating, and now shows a mellow golden patina. The walnut stock shows the normal handling mars, but is in overall good condition. The rear sling swivel is still present, and one has been added to the front via the band used to retain the leather cover. This Model 1862 Sharps & Hankins Navy carbine is in overall good condition, and will make a great candidate for the Civil War carbine collector who's missing one of these!
