This is a souvenir badge from the 1924 United Confederate Veterans reunion held in Memphis, Tennessee. Memphis was the site of the 34th National UCV reunion that was held 3 -6 June, 1924. Memphis was selected as the city to host three UCV National reunions, 1901, 1909 and finally in 1924. The Shelby County Auditorium had just been completed, but had not officially opened. It was there that the UCV conducted all it's activities, being the first to utilize the new facility. This reunion badge has survived the past 98 years in remarkable condition. It is a two piece badge, with a header and a drop. The header is oval shaped and shows the Shelby County auditorium, with the words LEE HIGHWAY below it and a banner with the words MEMPHIS, TENN. below the building. Suspended below the header is the drop. Written in a banner streaming along the top is 34th REUNION U.C.V. MEMPHIS 1924. Below the banner is a figure of Nathan Bedford Forrest mounted on horseback with the Mississippi River and the city of Memphis behind him. Below the image of General Forrest are some laurel branches and a Confederate battle flag. The small flag has two small chips in the enamel paint. The badge measures 1 1/2" at the widest point and approximately 2 5/8" tall. It is back marked WHITEHEAD & HOAG in an arc over NEWARK, N.J. A part of the pin is broken off on the back of the header. These badges would have been worn on the uniforms of Confederate veterans, and this one has a beautiful untouched patina and powerful eye appeal!
