Turney Bivouac No. 13 Members Winchester, Tennessee 1895
Item #: WR802
This is a photograph of 37 members of the Peter Turney Bivouac Number 13 located in Winchester, Tennessee made in 1895. The Association of the Confederate Soldiers was founded in 1885 as the Tennessee Confederate Memorial and Historical Association. In 1887 the name was changed to The Association of the Confederate Soldiers. In 1889 the Association of Confederate Soldiers affiliated with the United Confederate Veterans and the term bivouac gave way to camp. The bivouacs were named in honor of notable Confederate soldiers. Bivouac Number 13 in Franklin County, Winchester, Tennessee was named after Colonel Peter Turney, former commander of the 1st Tennessee Infantry Regiment, part of the Tennessee Brigade that served with the Army of Northern Virginia. Turney commanded the 1st Tennessee from the First Battle of Bull Run in July, 1861 until his wounding in December, 1862 at the Battle of Fredericksburg. He was given an administrative command in Florida and never rejoined the regiment. This photograph was taken in 1895 and used as a centerfold for a magazine. It shows 37 Confederate Veterans of Franklin County, Tennessee. The flag displayed on the right side of the photograph is the Standard of the Turney Bivouac. It depicts Peter Turney, the first Tennessean to fly the Confederate flag in the state. Turney also raised the first regiment for service in the Confederate Army. Both of these things happened before Tennessee had seceded from the Union. All of the individuals in the photo are identified on the back of the frame by name. This is an early and rare image of Confederate veterans taken in the late 1800's. The frame measures 14 1/2" wide, 12 1/2" high with the photo being 9 1/4" wide and 7 1/2" high. Here's another great candidate for the UCV collector!
