This is an excavated Union General Service kepi button that came into the shop recently from a local collection. The button was recovered in a former Union campsite in Chattanooga, Tennessee near the site of the Battle of Lookout Mountain. The battle took place on 24 November, 1863 when Union forces under the command of MG Joseph Hooker assaulted the Confederate left flank of troops commanded by MG Carter Stevenson. Hooker's men carried the Confederate left, and his men were able to join in the Battle of Missionary Ridge the following day. This is a Union General Service button with no visible back mark. It is of two piece construction and has a shank. The button is free of damage, but the shank is bent over to one side. It has achieved an absolute beautiful chocolate brown patina. There is a small piece of the kepi lining that was recovered with the button. This button would make a great piece for the beginning collector in your family!
