This is a US Model 1918 overseas cap used during World War I. When the American Expeditionary Force shipped out to France they wore the campaign hat, known as the Montana Peak hat. After their arrival they were initial issued British made helmets, then eventually some units were issued the US made 1918 steel helmet. When not in the trenches, the American soldiers wanted a piece of headgear they could wear that would fold up and fit in a pocket. The Americans copied the French Bonnet de Police, an envelope style fatigue cap, and created the overseas cap. The 1918 overseas cap was the predecessor to the garrison cap, authorized for wear in the US in 1940. This 1918 overseas cap is in very good condition with no moth damage at all. There is no makers label and doesn't look like there ever was. I believe this is a French made cap. The size of 7 1/4 is ink stamped on the inside on the cloth sweatband. Many of the WWI uniforms on the market today are missing these caps, this would be a nice way to round out your favorite one!
