This is a group of 12 assorted buttons from an east Tennessee collection. The majority of the buttons are authentic Civil War period and earlier, most of them being excavated. There are six coat size Union General Service buttons, three of them back marked SCOVILL MFG CO and one EXTRA QUALITY and two with no back mark. I believe two of theses buttons are reproductions, the other four are authentic Civil War period. Four of the shanks are standing straight, one is slightly leaning and one is flat against the back of the button. There are two small cuff or kepi size buttons, non dug, that look to be reproduction. The shanks of these two buttons are straight. There are three pre Civil War buttons, all excavated, that look to be made of pewter. Two of the buttons are coat size and the third is a cuff or vest button size. All three have shanks that are standing tall. The last button is a Grand Army of the Republic lapel button. It has no damage and a drop dead gorgeous patina. I'm not sure where these originate from, but they would make nice start to some young collector's collection!
