This is a Carte de Vista of General Joseph Eggleston Johnston. Born in Cherry Grove, near Farmville, Virginia on 3 February 1807, Johnston was the seventh son of Judge Peter Johnston Jr. Johnston attended the United States Military Academy in 1825 and graduated 13th out of a class of 46 in 1829. His first assignment after graduating from the academy was as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th US Artillery Regiment. Joseph E Johnston would go on to become the first West Point graduate to attain the rank of Brigadier General on 28 June, 1860. This was an achievement only he could claim from the class of 1829, surpassing his classmate Colonel Robert E. Lee. Johnston served with distinction during the Mexican American War and the Seminole Wars. Like many of the other southern born officers, when war was imminent and the southern states seceded from the Union, Johnston resigned from the US Army and joined the Confederate Army. During the four year long conflict, Joseph E. Johnston rose to the rank of General in the Confederate Army. He held positions of command at the highest levels, commanding the Army of the Shenandoah, the Confederate Army of the Potomac, Command of the Western Theater and the Army of Tennessee at the end of the war. This CDV is in very good condition. Johnston's uniform is a frock coat with the three stars of a Colonel on the collar. The image shows Johnston with his shoulders square with the camera. The front of the print has GEN. JOS. E. JOHNSTON, C.S.A. printed in black at the bottom. A canceled two cent stamp is on the reverse of the image. The cancellation mark is dated 21 November, 1866 and is for Montgomery, Alabama. The corners of the image are square and crisp. The image is free of smudges, stains, rips, tears or any other imperfections. There is no back mark on this CDV. If you collect Civil War images, your collection won't be complete without this one!
