This is a second pattern US Model 1910 pack carrier used during World War I. They strapped directly to the bottom of the haversack to serve as an extension of the haversack. When the "Doughboys" packed up to go to war they carried everything in their haversack and pack carrier. The first pattern had "ears" with suspension rings on them at the narrow end. The second pattern did away with the ears and had a squared off tail. This second pattern pack carrier is in good condition. It has been used and has a couple of small stains, but no rips or holes. The khaki colored canvas retains it's original color and the US stencil is still very legible. The makers name and date is stenciled on the inside of the carrier, WILEY, BICKFORD, SWEET CO./AUG. 1918. The square brass buckles, strap ends and suspension rings all retain their blackening. This is a great representative of early US Army field gear that came out during WWI, and will go great with your WWI collection.
