This is a Carte de Vista of Confederate General James Ewell Brown Stuart. Born at Laurel Hill Farm, in Patrick County, Virginia on 6 February 1833, Stuart was the eighth of eleven children born to Archibald and Elizabeth Stuart. Stuart attended the United States Military Academy and graduated 13th out of a class of 46 in 1854. His first assignment after graduating from the academy was as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Regiment of Mounted Riflemen in Texas. Stuart served with distinction on the frontier, and was wounded in an engagement with the Cheyenne. Like many of the other southern born officers, when war was imminent and the southern states seceded from the Union, Stuart resigned from the US Army and joined the Confederate Army. During the four year long conflict, J.E.B. Stuart on rose to the rank of Major General in the Confederate Army. He held positions of command at the highest levels, commanding the 1st Virginia Cavalry Regiment under Stonewall Jackson and on to command all cavalry in the Army of Northern Virginia commanded by Robert E. Lee. The dashing cavalryman even went on to temporarily command Jackson's 2nd Corps when Stonewall Jackson was mortally wounded at Chancellorsville. This CDV is in very good condition. Stuart's uniform is barely distinguishable in this pose, but he is wearing a frock coat. The image shows Stuart with his shoulders square with the camera. The front of the print has GENERAL J. B. STUART, printed in black at the bottom. A canceled two cent stamp is on the reverse of the image. The cancellation mark is dated 21 November, 1866 and is for Montgomery, Alabama. The corners of the image are square and crisp. The image is free of smudges, stains, rips, tears or any other imperfections. There is no back mark on this CDV. If you collect Civil War images, your collection won't be complete without this one!
