This is a US Model 1928 meat can pouch used during World War II. It followed the design of the WWI version, known as the Model 1910 meat can pouch. These were used to carry what came to be known as the mess kit. On the inside back of the pouch are three sleeves used to store one knife, fork and spoon each. The only other component was the "meat can" itself. These were attached to the top of the haversack by means of two canvas straps sewn onto the haversack. The only major difference between the Model 1910 and the 1928 is the means used to secure the flap. The Model 1910 used a single snap, where the 1928 used a single strap. This khaki canvas meat can pouch is in unissued condition and has no wear, use or damage. It has no stamps anywhere, no makers marks. In 1932 the Quartermaster Department once again changed the specifications of the Model 1910 meat can. The new pan was deeper and had a segmented lid. Due to the number of WWI Model 1910 meat cans still in the inventory, production of the new specifications did not start until WWII. The plate of this Model 1942 set is made of aluminum, as is the meat can and they are held together by a galvanized iron handle. This Model 1942 meat can is in very good condition, no dents, gouges or warpage. The galvanized iron handle is stamped U.S./LEYSE/1945. The set of US Model 1926 military mess kit utensils used during World War II came with the mess kit. These sets were made up of tin plated steel or rust resistant steel. During WWII, the knife handle was made of bakelite or aluminum. All three utensils are stamped US on the front of the handle. The knife is stamped L.F.&C. /1945 on the back of the handle. All three of the utensils have a slot in the handle so that it can be slipped over the mess kit handle to facilitate cleaning at field kitchen locations in boiling water. This little jewel will go a long way in completing your WWII US Infantry collection. These can be seen in countless pictures of the troops ashore on D Day on the tops of haversacks. If you want a complete representation of the US World War II infantryman, you gotta have one of these in your collection.
