This is a Carte de Vista of Confederate General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. Born in the town of Clarksburg, Virginia on 21 January, 1824, Jackson was the third of four children born to Jonathan and Julia Jackson. Jackson attended the United States Military Academy and graduated 17th out of a class of 59 in 1846. His first assignment after graduating from the academy was as a 2nd Lieutenant in K Company, 1st US Artillery Regiment. Jackson served with distinction during the Mexican American War, earning two brevet promotions and the regular Army rank of 1st Lieutenant. In the spring of 1851 Thomas Jackson accepted a teaching position at the Virginia Military Institute. He was not a very popular educator with the student body. In April of 1861 Major Jackson was ordered to report to Richmond with the VMI Corps of Cadets. He was appointed a Colonel of Infantry on 27 April, 1861 and sent to take command of Harper's Ferry. There he formed and trained what would become known as the "Stonewall Brigade". During the next two years, Stonewall Jackson rose to the rank of Lieutenant General in the Confederate Army. He held positions of command at the highest levels, commanding the 1st Virginia "Stonewall" Brigade under Robert E. Lee and on to command the Second Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia commanded by Robert E. Lee. Stonewall Jackson was wounded at Chancellorsville on 2 May, 1863 and died of pneumonia on 10 May, 1863. This CDV is in very good condition. Jackson's uniform is very distinguishable in this pose, wearing the coat of a Major in the United States Army. The image shows Jackson with his shoulders facing to the right of the camera. The front of the print has GENERAL THOS. J. JACKSON, printed in black at the bottom. There is no back mark or canceled postage stamp on the back of the image. The corners of the image are square and crisp. The image is free of smudges, stains, rips, tears or any other imperfections. There is no back mark on this CDV.
