This is a non matching set of two spoons from the Civil War era. One spoon measures 5 1/8" in length, the other is 6 1/2" in length. Neither has a visible makers mark. Both spoons were recovered in Suffolk, Virginia near the Confederate battery at the Norfleet House. The Battle of Norfleet House took place 14-15 April, 1863. 25,000 Union troops under the command of Brigadier General John J. Peck were under siege by 20,000 Confederate troops under the command of Major General James Longstreet. The Union works were formidable and were not likely to fall from direct assault. On 13 April Confederate forces occupied Hill's Point and placed a battery there, blocking the Union forces from resupply by river. On 14 April Union gunboats attempted to run past the Confederate battery but were repulsed and the USS Mount Washington was crippled. Meanwhile, the Union troops constructed batteries that commanded the Confederate position at the Norfleet house. On 15 April the Union batteries opened fire on the Confederate positions, forcing them to withdraw. The battle was deemed inconclusive, but the Confederates lost this important position on the river. The two spoons are not regulation, but more than likely privately owned and carried by some Confederate artillerymen.
