This is a certificate from the Association of Confederate Soldiers, Tennessee Division, for the admission of Thomas H. Maney into the Frank Cheatham Bivouac Number 1 that was located in Nashville, Tennessee. The Association of the Confederate Soldiers was founded in 1885 as the Tennessee Confederate Memorial and Historical Association. In 1887 the name was changed to The Association of the Confederate Soldiers. In 1889 the Association of Confederate Soldiers affiliated with the United Confederate Veterans and the term bivouac gave way to camp. The bivouacs were named in honor of notable Confederate soldiers. Bivouac Number 1 in Davidson County, Nashville, Tennessee was named after Confederate General Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Cheatham, former division and corps commander in the hard fought Army of Tennessee. Cheatham commanded a division of the Army of Tennessee at the Battles of Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, the Chattanooga Campaign and the Atlanta Campaign. When John Bell Hood was named to command the Army of Tennessee, Cheatham took over command of Hood's former corps. Although wounded on several occasions, Cheatham survived the war and did not pass away until September of 1886. This original Association of Confederate Soldiers document is in amazing condition. It is framed in an unmatted format along with an image (post war) of Thomas H. Maney. It measures 26 1/4" wide and 20 1/4" high. Maney was a 19 year old teenager from Nashville, Tennessee when he joined Company B, 1st Tennessee Infantry Regiment. He enlisted on 10 May, 1861 as a 1st Lieutenant. He was wounded at the Battles of Perryville, Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. From October of 1864 until the end of the war he served with Carter's scouts. He was paroled in May, 1865 in Gainesville, Alabama. The certificate is very colorful, and has an image of a soldier leaving home at the beginning of the war at the top left, and a ragged soldier walking with canes returning to a destroyed home at the end of the war in the opposite corner. At the top in the center is a Confederate First National flag, a Third National flag and a Confederate battle flag. At the bottom in the center is a battle scene. A post war image of Maney dressed in his UCV uniform is in the middle right and a stand of arms is portrayed in the middle left of the certificate. The document was signed and given the official seal of the Association of Confederate Soldiers in Nashville, Tn. on 24 August, 1891 and is signed by W. J. McMurray, President and Johnathan P. Hickman, Secretary of the association. If you are a UCV collector, this thing has really got to get you going!
