This book was written by Ulysses S. Grant, published in two volumes in 1885 and 1886, the narrative is 584 pages for Volume 1, 648 pages for Volume 2 and is illustrated with drawings of Grant, battlefield maps and a facsimile of Grant's surrender terms to Robert E Lee at Appomattox. This is a first edition set of books. It focuses on Grant's military career during the Mexican American War and the American Civil War. These volumes were written during the final year of Grant's life. He was dying from throat cancer, and was financially bankrupt due to a money scheme his son was involved with. Mark Twain was a close personal friend of Grant's, and saw his memoirs as a way to restore the Grant families finances and provide for the former president's widow. This two volume set of hard back books is in fair condition.
