This is a pair of US Army Air Force B-1 pants used during World War II. The leather pants are in fair condition, with the leather being somewhat dry, but still pliable. There is a tear in the leather approximately 6" long near the right front suspender reinforcement tab on the front. There are several other small tears on the left pants leg where the leather has been creased. The leather pockets sewn on the front of each leg are securely attached and open at the top. The main zipper in the crotch is a Conmar brand and still works. The leg zippers at the ankle are both made by Talon. The left zipper works, but the right one does not. There is an area along the seam of the right pants leg that has been repaired just above the zipper, approximately 2" in length. The tag is securely sewn in the waist area on the back side of the pants. It is black with gold stitching and reads "TYPE B-1/SIZE LARGE/SPEC. NO. 94-3085/ORDE NO. 42-22262/PROPERTY/AIR FORCE, U.S. ARMY/H. BERNSTEIN & CO.". The suspenders are correct for these pants are in very good condition. The are stenciled with the laundry number W-8698. There has been no research done on this laundry number. The B-1 pants were issued to ground crews to wear while performing maintenance on aircraft during cold weather conditions. However, there are plenty of photos that show air crews wearing these very same pants. If you have a US Army Air Force collection this set of B-1 pants would look good in it!
