This is a Carte de Vista of an unknown officer of the Washington Artillery of New Orleans, Louisiana. The battalion was organized in 1838 and saw service in the Mexican American War, at that time being known as the "Native American" battalion. It was reorganized in 1852 and became known as the Washington Artillery. On 26 May, 1861 all five companies of the Washington Artillery were mustered into the Confederate Army. Companies 1-4 fought with the Army of Number 5 company fought in the Western theater, eventually being assigned to the Army of Tennessee. This CDV is in good condition. The officer's uniform is very distinguishable in this pose, wearing a frock coat with waist belt utilizing a tongue and wreath buckle, chausseur style cap and carrying a light artillery saber. The image shows this unidentified officer in a full standing position with his shoulders and head square to the camera. The crossed cannon insignia on each side of the stand up collar is representative of that worn only by officers of the Washington Artillery. The chausseur style kepi with braid and the quatrefoil on the coat sleeves shows this is an officer of at least 1st Lieutenant rank. The buckle is likely one that was used by the Washington Artillery, a tongue with the letters WA on the face surrounded by the wreath when worn. There is no back mark or canceled postage stamp on the back of the image. There is a slight loss of the image at the officer's right foot. The upper left corner of the image has been creased long ago. The image is free of smudges or stains and still has very good clarity of the subject. To protect the image it has been encased in a clear acrylic case, from which it can be removed at any time. If you collect Civil War images, your collection won't be complete without this rare image of a Confederate Washington Artillery officer!
