This is a US Navy Diaphragm Optical Mask with carrier that was used during World War II. The mask, an NDO (Navy Diaphragm Optical) Mark I was developed from the Army gas mask MI-I-5 Army Optical Gas Mask in 1941. The lenses of the mask are small and circular so that binoculars could be used with the mask, or glasses worn. The brow that connects the two lenses is used to adjust the lenses. The small lenses allowed for a very narrow field of view. A voicemitter is utilized to allow for clear communication between sailors when wearing the mask. The mask uses two hoses to connect to the filter, which fits behind the wearer's neck. The filter is the B2 type, gray in color. The rubber mask is stamped on the top USN/U, representing United States Navy and the size of Universal, meaning the mask will fit practically any person's head. Under the chin cup the stamps 1-44 and and LOT 1 are to the left and right of the Mine Safety Appliance logo. Below that stamp are the raised letters GR - M. The tab below the voicemitter also has stamps the read LOT 3 1944 and the MSA logo again. Tyhe six point adjustable head harness is in very good condition. The B2 filter is in good condition as well. The paper label, printed by the Mine Safety Appliance Company, is perfectly legible, while the paint on the filter itself showing some scratching. The canvas duck carrier the mask came in is for the Mark IV mask. All stenciling is perfectly legible, to include the MSA logo on the inside of the carrier. All stitching on the carrier is strong and unbroken, all three lift the dot snaps operational and the carrying strap is present. There is some light staining on the carrier and strap. This is a very nice example of an early WWII Navy gas mask that would go well with a ship board battle station display!
