This is a Southern Cross of Honor presented to Obediah Vincent. The Southern Cross of Honor was created by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and established in 1898. It was bestowed upon Confederate veterans who displayed "Loyal and Honorable service to the South". The medal was first issued in 1900. A search of the Civil War database revealed one Virginia soldier with the name of Obediah Vincent, enlisting as a Private in Company A, 31st Virginia Infantry Regiment on 17 May, 1861. The unit was organized in July, 1861 under Colonel William L. Jackson. The 31st was made up of men from Barbour, Marion, Pendleton, Harrison, Gilmer, Randolph, Pocahontas, Lewis and Highland counties of Virginia. The 31st Virginia Infantry Regiment saw action at the Battle of Phillipi, the Battle of Cheat Mountain, Jackson's Valley Campaign, the Seven Days Battles, the Second Battle of Bull Run, The Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, the Battle of Gettysburg, the Battle of Cold Harbor, the Siege of Petersburg, the Valley Campaigns of 1864 and the Appomattox Campaign. This hard fought Virginia Infantry Regiment surrendered at Appomattox on 9 April, 1865 with 7 officers and 49 enlisted men. Private Vincent was wounded at Gettysburg on 3 July, 1863 and listed as a Prisoner of War on 5 May, 1865 at Clarksburg, West Virginia. He was paroled on 26 May, 1865. His Southern Cross is a very nice example, and will go great with your other UCV items.
