Task Force 77 Operation King II US Naval Plans for the Invasion of the Philippines at Leyte Gulf
Item #: WR879
This is the second rarest historical document to come into my possession! It is Copy Number 400 of the operational plans for the US Navy for the invasion of the Philippine Island at Leyte. The invasion plans are not in the original binder. The outside cover of the plan is marked TOP SECRET/COMMANDER TASK FORCE/SEVENTY-SEVEN/MUSKETEER/KING II. There are a total of 195 pages, including the accompanying maps, with the top of each written page being marked Top Secret. The invasion of the Philippines at Leyte took place in October of 1944, and by then the US military had acquired plenty of experience with island fighting and all the contingencies that can occur. The operational plan is broken down into 15 annexes, each with multiple appendices. Included in the annexes listed are: A. Assignment of forces B. Concept of operations C. Movement plan D. SOPA instructions E. Attack plans F. Heavy weather plan G. Air plan H. Submarine operations I. Boat pool plan J. Salvage plan K. Logistics plan L. Navigational annex M. Intelligence annex N. Communication plan O. Command organization. While this document is fragile, it is 100% complete. The Battle of Leyte Gulf took place from 23 October through 26 October, 1944 and it proved to be a decisive victory for the U.S. Navy. During the 4 day long naval battle the Imperial Japanese Navy suffered 12500 casualties and lost 1 fleet carrier, 3 light carriers, 3 battleships, 10 cruisers and 11 destroyers along with over 300 aircraft. The American Navy suffered 3000 casualties and lost 1 light carrier, 2 escort carriers, 2 destroyers, 1 destroyer escort and 255 aircraft. The US forces responsible for the invasion, capture and occupation of the Philippines were designated as Task Force 77, commanded by Vice Admiral Thomas C Kinkaid. This is Copy Number 400 of the Naval plans for the Philippine invasion, truly a rare and historical document. Occasionally maps or others information from different invasion plans become available on the market, but hardly ever do you see a complete set of plans come for sale. If you are a serious Pacific theater collector, this is a must piece for your collection!
