This is an early Confederate Boyle & Gamble Cavalry saber from the Civil War. The sword measures 40 1/4" overall, with a blade length of 35". The blade is slightly curved with a flat spine and measures 1 1/8" at the ricasso. It is a single edged blade with an unstopped fuller that measures 24". The edge of the blade is free of nicks or dings. The blade has that black "out of the attic" look that everyone loves to seen in a relic piece! The blade is unmarked, but this one is without a doubt a Richmond product of Boyle & Gamble. The blade has never been sharpened. The brass hilt has a matching, untouched black patina, with a hint of that Confederate "red brass" tint showing through. There are no stamps or markings on the guard. There are a couple of cracks and casting flaws in the guard, mostly where the lower branch and the center of the guard join. The original leather washer is long gone. The wooden grip is completely missing, leaving the tang of the blade completely exposed. The brass pommel cap has the "high hat" feature found on these Confederate swords and matches the patina of the rest of the sword. The peen appears to be unmolested. The hilt, pommel cap and blade are all very tight, and there is only a slight deflection when handled. The partial scabbard is made of copper and has a brass throat and upper mount. The scabbard is broken in two just above the upper mount, and approximately 8 1/4" below the upper mount the remainder of the scabbard is missing. The sword comes with a letter from the previous owner explaining how this early Boyle & Gamble Cavalry saber came into his possession. It will accompany the sword to it's new owner. I can tell you that it was recovered in an outbuilding near Fairfax Courthouse, Virginia. Overall this is an exceptional example of a no frills, Confederate manufactured Cavalry saber that saw service during the Civil War. It will complement any Confederate Cavalry collection.
