Springfield Model 1868 Trapdoor Rifle
Item #: WR884
This is an early Model 1868 Springfield Trapdoor rifle. They were manufactured at the Springfield Armory between 1868 and 1872, with a total production of 51,389 pieces being produced. This .50-70 caliber centerfire rifle has matching serial numbers on the barrel and breech and was manufactured in 1869. It has an overall length of 52", with a barrel length of 32 1/2". The barrel exterior has slight pitting scattered along the entire length. The barrel has taken on a light plum patina, while the breech has a nice steel gray patina, with traces of the National Armory Bright finish showing here and there. The bore is turning dark, but still shows good rifling with light pitting throughout. A good cleaning will probably do wonders for the bore. An inspectors stamp of H is stamped into the barrel just below the rear sight on the right side. The left side of the barrel has the serial number 21479 stamped on it. The breech is stamped with the same serial number, 21479, also on the left side. It is equipped with a first issue "high arch" breech block assembly inscribed 1869/Eagle Head/Crossed Arrows/U.S. The lock plate sits flush with the stock, is beveled and is marked forward of the hammer U.S./Springfield/ with an Eagle and dated 1863 behind the hammer. This lock still shows some good case hardening colors. It has a first type, coarse knurled hammer and a two position tumbler. The rear sight is a Model 1868 variant and looks original to the gun. The front sight is original to the gun. The trigger guard has been provisioned for a sling swivel. The trigger has a smooth surface. The iron butt plate is stamped US and does not have a trap door. The two barrel bands are the clamping type found on Type I 1863 Springfield rifle muskets and are stamped with the small u. The stock also utilizes barrel band retaining springs to prevent the bands from moving if the screws on the bands loosen. The stock is solid and has not been sanded or refinished. The ESA cartouche worn, but still legible on the left stock flat. There are no cracks or major wood loss anywhere on the stock. It has not been drilled to accept gun tools. The wood has taken on a nice dark brown appearance. There are plenty of bumps and dings from handling during service, but this gun has not been abused. This is an overall fine example of an early Model 1868 Trapdoor rifle.
