This is a freight contract from the Adams Express Company dated from 1901. The document is a single sheet, double sided contract. One side states the company's mission, "Forwarders by Express to all parts of the United States. Connections made, and rates given, to CANADA, MEXICO, AUSTRALIA and all parts of EUROPE, ASIA and AFRICA". They go on to state "shipments forwarded by fastest passenger trains in charge of messengers". It also says "this company has about 6,000 agencies and operates nearly 40,000 miles of railroads. The reverse side of the document lists the contract agreement between the Adams Express Company and a S Haggerty. The shipment is marked Jones S Haggerty and Huitch of Philad PA. The document is signed by the company's agent, N Myers. This company was founded in 1854 as a freight and cargo transport company that was part of the Pony Express Company. They operated as such until 1929, when they company transitioned into an investment company in 1929. In October of 1929 the stock market crashed, and the Great Depression began. Adams managed to survive and is one of the oldest closed end funds for the past 91 years. The document is damaged, missing the upper left hand corner. Fortunately, very little of the print of the document was in that corner! There is a cancelled 1 cent United States Internal Revenue stamp on the upper right hand corner. There is also one small hole on the left hand side. This document will fit into shipping & freight company collections or look good framed on your investment brokers wall!
