Identified Southern Cross of Honor Private Thomas M. Goldsby
Item #: WR899
This is a Southern Cross of Honor presented to Thomas M. Goldsby. The Southern Cross of Honor was created by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and established in 1898. It was bestowed upon Confederate veterans who displayed "Loyal and Honorable service to the South". The medal was first issued in 1900. A search of the Civil War database revealed one Virginia soldier with the name of Thomas M Goldsby, enlisting as a Private in Company A, 13th Virginia Light Artillery Battalion on 1 September, 1863. The unit was formed in late 1863, with many recruits coming from Richmond's middle and upper classes. Company A was known as Otey's-Walker's Battery, named after the commanders of the battery. Captain George G. Otey formed a battery of light artillery on 14 March, 1862. Initial it was assigned to the Artillery Battalion, District of Lewisburg, Department of Southwestern Virginia. From May through September of 1862 this artillery battery was involved in engagements at Giles, Court House, Virginia, the Kanawha Campaign, Fayetteville, West Virginia and Charleston West Virginia. Captain Otey was mortally wounded at Lewisburg, West Virginia on 23 May, 1862 and Lt David N. Walker assumed command. The battery, under the command of Captain Walker, saw action at the Battle of Cold Harbor, the Siege of Petersburg, the Battle of the Crater, and the Appomattox Campaign. On 5 April, 1865 the Otey battery was issued Enfield muskets and fought as infantry, their last fight being on 8 April, 1865 with Custer's Cavalry. The unit surrendered on 9 April, 1865 with Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Private Goldsby was wounded, a gunshot wound to his left arm, and was hospitalized at the Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond on 22 June, 1864. He was granted a 60 day wound furlough 5 July, 1864, and transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps, Quartermaster Department, Fields Division, on 5 December, 1864. He is listed in the roster of Appomattox paroles. This is a very nice example of a Southern Cross, identified to a Virginia artilleryman, that will fit into any UCV or Virginia collection.
