This is an Air Raid Warden's helmet from World War II. The Air Raid Warden program feel under the supervision of the Office of Civilian Defense. It was established in May of 1941 by President Roosevelt to take responsibility for planning and managing community health and medical care of civilians in the event of a military attack on the US. There were many departments that operated within the purview of the OCD, but none more recognizable than the Air Raid Warden. The men and women of the Air Raid Warden department were tasked with protecting the lives of their neighbors. Their principle duty was the enforcement of the blackout at night, ensuring no light escaped any building in their assigned sector that could potentially been seen by enemy aircraft. They were not police, firemen or emergency medical workers, but could be called upon to perform any of these duties if needed. They even had special powers to arrest suspected saboteurs. They were expected to direct civilian personnel to air raid shelters in the event of an attack, maintaining order and discipline and assisting with any requirements of the local agencies. This Air Raid Warden's helmet is made in the style of a US Model 1917 military helmet, but is definitely a copy of one. There are no makers stamps, or US/O.C.D. stamps anywhere on the helmet. The helmet is the correct white color, but looks like someone has put a thin coat of tan paint over it. The Air Raid Warden symbol is clearly visible on the front of the helmet. The cotton chin strap is still attached, along with the adjustment buckle. The liner is present, but is torn at one of the attachment points. It is not made like the conventional military liner, this one is cloth weave with a narrow brown leather sweatband sewn to it. The sweatband shows plenty of staining from wear. It is a nice example of a piece from the war effort on the home front, and will display well with any home front collection.
