UCV Image of Thomas J. Jones Company B Veterans, Nashville, Tennessee

This is an early 1900's image of United Confederate Veteran Thomas J. Jones of the Company B Veterans of Nashville, Tennessee. The image measures 3 3/4" wide and 5 1/2" high. The frame measures 10 1/4" wide and 12 1/4" high. The image shows Jones wearing a kepi with a military style sack coat. Visible on the front of his kepi are the crossed rifles of the Infantry branch. Partially visible on the left breast of the jacket is a badge, more than likely a Nashville reunion badge. He is sporting a pretty long goatee that gives him a wild man look! This image was most likely taken in the twilight years of Thomas Jones' life. He was born 4 February, 1844 in Liberty, Tennessee. When he enlisted on 15 November, 1861, he was a 17 year old railroad worker. He was mustered in a Private at Shelbyville, Tennessee as part of Company F (the Shelbyville Rebels), 41st Tennessee Infantry Regiment. Private Jones was captured, along with most of his regiment, on 16 February, 1862 at Fort Donelson, Tennessee. The 41st Tennessee, Private Jones included, was paroled at Vicksburg, Mississippi on 18 September, 1862. The 41st Tennessee, now part of General John Gregg's brigade, moved to Port Hudson, Louisiana in January of 1863. Somewhere in this vicinity Private Jones was again captured around 1 April, 1863. He remained a prisoner of war until he took the Oath of Allegiance on 22 May, 1865 at Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Indiana. Thomas Jones returned to his native Tennessee and lived out the remainder of his life in Nashville, Tennessee. Included with this image is a cabinet card of Jones and what I presume to be his wife. It looks as though it was made the same time of his UCV image. The simple gold frame presents well with Private Jones post war image, and will look great in any UCV collection.
