This is an Imperial Japanese Army officer's private purchase back pack from World War II. The khaki colored cloth pack measures 13" high, 10" wide and expands out to 4" thick. The interior compartment is divided into two sections, a larger area that is secured closed by a draw string and a smaller white cloth pouch secured closed by two cloth ties. The larger section was probably used to carry a couple extra sets of uniforms, undershirts, socks and drawers. The smaller cloth pouch would allow for a more secure place for personal articles and hygiene products. At least that's how I used to load up my ruck! In addition to the main compartment there is one smaller compartment near the bottom of the pack on the rear. It measures 5 3/4" high, 8 1/2" wide and expands out to 2" comfortably. This compartment is secured closed by two metal twist tabs that fir through two metal grommets. The outer flap of the main compartment is secured closed by a leather strap and roller buckle. The pack is supported by two leather carrying straps that have a strip of wool material sewn onto the top halves of the straps for cushioning. The two bottom corners on the back side of the pack have leather reinforcements sewn on. The stitching is broken on the upper right side where the cloth bag is sewn onto the reinforced back. It is broken at the top of the corner and is loose for 3 1/2". This could be repaired quite easily. The remainder of the stitching is still strong and unbroken. The leather straps on the pack are still strong and pliable. The leather reinforcements on the bottom corners are pretty worn and about 50% missing. There are a couple of kanji characters on the inside of the pack, but I have no idea what they say. This is a good example of a private purchase Japanese officer's back pack from WWII, and would add nicely to your Pacific theater collection.
