This is a German Model 1940 helmet excavated from a site of the Battle of Stalingrad that took place from 23 August, 1942 through 2 February, 1943 in Russia. The helmet is in relic condition, but is very stable. There is no liner or chinstrap, but all three rivets are still in place. There are no visible decals, heat stamps or or markings on the helmet. There is plenty of winter white camouflage paint still showing on the helmet. There are numerous holes in the helmet, most caused by rust and deterioration from being in the ground so long, but it looks to have been struck by a bullet or shrapnel as well. In addition to the holes, there are two long cracks, one on the front and one on the rear of the helmet. The outer shell has the half basket chicken wire camouflage attached to it. The interior of the helmet matches the exterior in appearance. While it is in relic condition, this helmet has some great display power, and comes from the one of the costliest sieges of WWII. It will make a great conversation piece among your WWII German collection.
