This is a pre war dated partial letter from an unknown person in Manningham, Alabama. The letter was written to someone named Eddie and is dated 11 February, 1861. The letter is very well written and easy to read, as long as you can read cursive writing! It is in very good condition. The letter reads: Manningham, Ala February 11t,h 1861 in the upper right hand corner. "Dear EDDIE: Yours of the 27th was received a week hence; I ought and intended to have replied to it immediately; but owing to the fact that I have been pretty closely engaged for the last few weeks; and besides I was so much disturbed in mind during the last week that I could not have concentrated my ideas sufficient to have written with any sense at all; even if I can now.
The chief cause of my disturbance is the worthless overseer that I had the misfortune to employ for the present year. However as I have discharged him I shall be disturbed no more on that score, only when I think how much he damaged me and the outrageous sum I had to pay to get rid of him. You are correct in your conclusion that Alabama is a better state to live in than Virginia, in fact Alabama is by far the best state of all to live in and some portion of it is the best country in the world; but no doubt those raised in each southern state thinks their state the best.
I am truly glad Virginia is improving as all the border slave states are improving on the secession question. I sincerely hope that the Republicans will hold"
and that's where the letter ends. Obviously there were multiple pages, and this is the only one that survived. While it is missing some of the content, this is still an interesting read. Whoever wrote the letter discusses a bad overseer, how much he has cost him while employed, and how much it required to get rid of him. He discusses how great the state of Alabama is, and this is way before Nick Saban's time! He touches on slavery, slave states and the Republican party. Kind of has the makings for a decent movie! There is nothing written on the back and there is no envelope. If you're a document collector, this one deserves a place in the collection!
