This is a US Model 1918 overseas cap used during World War I. When the American Expeditionary Force shipped out to France they wore the campaign hat, known as the Montana Peak hat. After their arrival they were initially issued British made helmets, then eventually some units were issued the US made 1918 steel helmet. When not in the trenches, the American soldiers wanted a piece of headgear they could wear that would fold up and fit in a pocket. The Americans copied the French Bonnet de Police, an envelope style fatigue cap, and created the overseas cap. The 1918 overseas cap was the predecessor to the garrison cap, authorized for wear in the US in 1940. This 1918 overseas cap is in very good condition with no moth damage at all. There is a makers label sewn onto the left ide of the cloth sweatband. It is ink stamped SIZE 7/FRANK P. HEID & CO./September 21, 1918/Contract No. 6473-P. A rare WWI Aviation cap insignia is worn on the left side. It uses the Signal Corps device, and superimposed in silver, are a set of wings with a globe in the center. This version of the Enlisted Aviator collar device was approved by General Pershing on 27 April, 1918. This device was superseded on 17 July, 1918 by the insignia of a winged propeller. That makes this 80 day cap device extremely rare. If you have a WWI Aviation collection this is a piece you probably don't have.
