WWII Japanese Shell Case Trench Art Candle Holders

This is a set of Japanese brass shell cases made into trench art candle holders. The cases are nominally 2 1/4" tall and 2" across the base. The brass has attained a beautiful dark chocolate patina. The outside of each shell case has been hand engraved with a heart pierced with an arrow, and the name DESS inside the heart. The closest piece of Japanese artillery that matches the dimensions of the shell cases is the Type 1 47mm anti tank gun. I haven't been able to decipher the head stamps on the base of the cases. No doubt some soldier or marine on one of the many Pacific islands we fought on picked these up and made them into some cool little keep sakes of the war, all while thinking of his girl back home!
