This is a Model 1851 Colt Navy cap and ball revolver. The serial number 1506 puts this one in the production year of 1850. This early Colt Navy is known as a "Squareback", due to the shape of the trigger guard. This is a 2nd Model Squareback, determined by the serial number, wedge screw located above the wedge and the wedge notch passing through the cylinder pin. There were only 4200 Squareback Colt Navy's produced, making them extremely rare. The 7 1/2" barrel has visible rifling and a dark bore. The single line ADDRESS COL. SAMl COLT NEW YORK City is very worn but still visible. The Colt patent mark is legible, but the cylinder scene is completely gone. One of the nipples is missing and the other five are damaged. The serial numbers on the backstrap, triggerguard, frame and loading lever are pretty legible, but the barrel is hard to make out. The wedge is blank, but has obviously been with the gun forever. The gun has no original finish remaining, it now has a dark brown patina. The mechanics of this old Colt work, but are pretty worn. Amazingly, there are traces of the original silver wash visible on the trigger guard. The exposed brass has taken on a mellow golden patina that is very eye pleasing. The walnut grips have none of the original varnish remaining, with a couple of small bumps and dings on the sides of the grips. They no longer fit the gun like a glove, instead they move around just a bit. They have been notched on the bottom in order to accept a lanyard. This old revolver fought with some Confederate soldier during the war of northern aggression. The flap holster is a Confederate made piece, being fashioned from a single piece of leather. The leather is pretty dry and stiff, and has a couple of period repairs. The original stitching is still strong and unbroken. The closure strap is an integral part of the flap, not torn or missing but does look to have a modern repair to the tip. The plug in the toe of the holster is still reporting for duty and is securely attached. The large belt loop on the back is securely attached as well. There is no cartouche or makers mark visible. This very early Colt Navy is almost in relic condition, has seen it's fair share of service, but it still displays well. There's no documentation to prove it, but one look and you'll agree this was a southern used revolver and most definitely a southern made holster! It will compliment any collection!
